Kaishindo’s sesame yōkan is a little speciality from traditional Japanese confectionery, ideal to enjoy as a dessert or during a break with a cup of green tea. Yōkan is made by slowly simmering a mixture of bean paste, sugar and kanten, a plant-based gelling agent derived from seaweed. In this version, the white bean paste is enriched with sesame, which gives the sweet a toasty aroma and a rounded, lingering flavour. The texture is firm, smooth and melt-in-the-mouth, whilst the handy 35 g portion means you can eat it straight away without having to cut it. The manufacturer describes this version as particularly aromatic, with the scent of sesame clearly discernible on the palate.
